Daemons of Chaos
For a while now, I’ve been itching to revisit my Chaos Daemons, and it seems like their moment has finally arrived!
With Warhammer 40k making a big comeback in my local gaming group, I’ve been contemplating which army to dive into for this edition. I’ve got a fair few armies in varying stages of completion, but the real question is: which one to focus on? My Orks are probably the most battle-ready, but I’ve played them so much over the years that I’m craving something different. Lately, it’s been a toss-up between Chaos and Tyranids.
Starting Tyranids from scratch would be a huge undertaking, and Chaos Space Marines just aren’t doing it for me in this edition. But my Chaos Daemons? Now, that’s an exciting prospect. The army’s already halfway done, with just a few units left to complete the force. Over the years, I’ve gathered some incredible minis and plenty of inspiration for this project. Yet, somehow, they always got pushed aside for other armies.
Recently, I’ve been combing through army lists, seeing what other players are fielding, and I realized—I already have most of what I need! Some units are even painted, including my Nurgle units and my Great Unclean One, who I painted ages ago but haven’t used much. The plan? Finish off the army with some brutal Khorne units and, eventually, maybe bring in some Tzeentch and Slaanesh. The Chaos Daemons are rising once again!
This is what i have so far:
As you can see those are all Nurgle units. Im planing to expand this with more Khorne stuff, which i already have but it needs some refreshing. Ill post progress on that soon.
Blood for the Blood God! The Khorne daemons rise again as I dive back into my collection of bloodthirsty models. This time, it’s all about the units dedicated to the Blood God himself.
I’ve been gathering these daemons for years, but other projects always seemed to push them aside. Now, with Khorne’s forces proving to be more formidable on the battlefield, it’s time to clear this part of my ever-growing pile of shame.
I’ve revisited some old models, including Fleshhounds, Juggernauts, and of course, the centerpiece—a massive Bloodthirster. The Bloodcrushers were originally painted black, but I wasn’t happy with how they turned out. I’ve since gone back to the classic red hues with bronze metallics to bring them more in line with Khorne’s brutal aesthetic.
As for the Bloodthirster, I wasn’t too keen on the official model, but luckily, I found a 3D model that I quite like. Big monsters weren’t my go-to in previous editions, but with recent changes making them more central in gameplay, I figured it was time to give this beast its due.
Basing these daemons was a bit of a challenge. I was going to stick with the traditional lava-hell theme, but it didn’t feel quite right anymore. After some experimenting with technical paints, I settled on a blood-soaked flesh look, no doubt inspired by my recent Diablo 4 sessions. To achieve the effect, I used Citadel’s Martian Ironearth and Blood for the Blood God technical paints, and I’m pretty happy with how it all came together.
The Blood God’s forces are looking more menacing than ever—time to spill some blood on the tabletop! Next i’ll add some Bloodletter units, some of them quite ancient.
